BEING AT

WORK

STAYING

OURSELVES

Entelecheia (eN-tell-EK-AY-uh) is the english transliteration of a greek phrase which means "having an end in itself"or as one translator called it, "being-at-work-staying-itself". Entelecheia is the idea that everything, be it human — or grapevine for that matter — is called to fulfill its nature, to be fully itself, to embrace all the variety and vulgarity of life and of being ourselves. Being ourself is an effort; it is work, and it is full of tension as we are never the same. Entelecheia embodies this sense of ceaselessly returning to and rediscovering who and what we are.

Practically, this means working with dedicated growers to make wines from the Finger Lakes that can only be from the Finger Lakes, using a low intervention style of winemaking, and having a lot of fun with it.

Winemaker:

My name is Matthew Denci, I am the founder and winemaker of Entelecheia Wine Cellars. I was seduced by the world of wine slowly, one step at a time, from a half pours at certain family dinners, to after-hours glasses with professors, then on working in wine shops, and at last making the leap into wine production.  After years traveling the globe making wine in Burgundy, Sonoma, the Yarra Valley and Marlborough, I fell into the Finger Lakes, fell for Riesling, and settled down.

People always ask how I got into wine, and the answer is uninteresting. It tastes great. The reason I stayed in wine on the other hand is because of the intricate and ancient bonds that emerge from working the land, creating a living product, and sharing it with others. That's why I do this; wine enables communion with people, with nature, and with myself.

Finally, Entelecheia is a personal project, but I am immensely grateful to the community of people who helped make it, and me, a reality, as neither of us would be here without them.
